Ghana plans to invest $270 million in the poultry sector, with 12,000 direct jobs and initial production of 20,000 tonnes a year. The project is intended to reduce chicken imports through an integrated supply chain, according to Accramail, with backing from Agrium Capital and Ghanaian partners.

Ghana has agreed a deal for a $270 million investment in poultry production, with a target of 12,000 direct jobs, according to Accramail. The project brings together Agrium Capital, a British agribusiness investment company, and Ghana’s 24-hour economy and accelerated export development programme.

The first phase is expected to produce 20,000 tonnes a year of processed broiler chickens, with capacity that could reach 50,000 tonnes. The project covers several links in the supply chain, from feed production and hatcheries to farming, processing, cold storage and distribution. It aims to reduce Ghana’s dependence on chicken imports, which weigh on foreign exchange reserves and expose consumers to fluctuations in international prices and supply.

Ghanaian institutional investors and the Ghana EXIM Bank are also expected to take part in the project. The agreement provides for cooperation between local capital and international investment, while the actual creation of facilities and jobs will depend on its implementation.
