A drone strike hit the al-Markhiyat power station, north-west of Omdurman, on Tuesday, causing a power cut in Khartoum, Sudan Tribune reported, citing local sources. Residents heard a loud explosion before the power went out, while the army’s air defences tried to intercept the drone.
It was the seventh attack on a power station in less than a week, according to Sudan Tribune. On Monday, drones attributed to the Rapid Support Forces targeted the al-Junayd power station in Al Jazirah State, those in Sennar, al-Hawata and al-Faw in Al Qadarif State, and the Mashkur station in White Nile State. Another power station in Tendelti, in White Nile State, had been hit a few days earlier.
The attacks caused widespread power cuts in several regions of central, eastern and western Sudan. In Omdurman, residents fear that the outage could also disrupt drinking-water pumping stations on the Nile if repairs are delayed. The latest bombardments add to the drone attacks on power stations in four Sudanese states, reported on 26 October.
