Six people have been rescued after a building collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi, including two taken to Kenyatta National Hospital in a stable condition. The Kenya Defence Forces stepped up the search with Chinese specialist teams and canine units, according to a statement issued on Monday.
Rescue teams have pulled six survivors from the rubble of a building under construction in Eastleigh, in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, according to the Kenyan military (KDF). Two people were rescued in subsequent operations and taken to Kenyatta National Hospital in a stable condition, the KDF said on Monday 26 October.
Kamukunji MP Yussuf Hassan announced that a Chinese search-and-rescue team, Blue Sky Rescue, had joined the operation with specialised equipment. It detected two people alive in the basement, he said. The military also deployed urban search teams, canine units and a rapid reaction unit from the Kenyan Air Force.
The building collapsed on Friday 23 October. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja raised questions about the building’s permits: the county had approved a change of use from residential to commercial and residential in October 2024.
The latest tally brings the number of rescued survivors to six, after four survivors were taken to hospital. The collapse had prompted questions about unapproved plans.
