Around 70 workers were inside the 18-storey building that collapsed on Friday 24 October in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district, workers interviewed by Citizen TV Kenya said. Most managed to get out after noticing a cracked column, but some colleagues who were in the basement remain missing.
The workers described a huge cloud of dust that made visibility almost zero: torches had to be used to make out someone standing right beside them. Several workers suffered minor injuries while fleeing the debris, while another said some colleagues had gone out for lunch around noon, according to Citizen TV Kenya.
The building had a water tank on one of its upper levels. The cause of the collapse had not been established at the time of the report, while Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja visited the site.
The collapse came a day after the collapse of an 18-storey building in Nairobi, reported on 23 October. A woman was subsequently rescued from the rubble.
