A woman rescued after a 16-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district was receiving treatment and responding well on Friday 23 October, as emergency teams searched for possible other victims, Capital FM reported. Police and emergency response teams were leading the operation at the scene.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud said rescuers had heard a second person calling for help beneath the rubble. The cries later stopped, heightening concern about the person’s fate, while teams continued clearing the debris carefully to avoid another accident.
The number of people in the building when it collapsed and the total number of victims had not yet been established. Authorities must also determine the circumstances of the collapse, including the condition of the structure and whether it complied with building and safety standards, according to Capital FM.
