Rescuers are continuing to search the rubble of a collapsed building under construction in Nairobi, where one person remained missing among 67 workers. Heavy machinery and several agencies are involved, while police are searching for the building’s owner, according to regional commander Issa Mohamud.
Rescuers continued searching on Saturday after a building under construction collapsed on 9th Street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district. One person remained missing among the 67 workers present at the site, according to an assessment issued by the authorities on Friday and reported by Citizen.
Teams from the police, Nairobi County emergency services, the Kenya Defence Forces, the Kenya Red Cross and the National Disaster Operations Centre were searching the rubble. Heavy machinery was clearing the debris, while the county health teams stood ready to treat any survivors. Police are searching for the building’s owner, according to regional commander Issa Mohamud.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja called on Friday for tougher sanctions against developers who breach building regulations. He criticised fines that could be as little as 5,000 Kenyan shillings and called for county governments to be allowed to bring prosecutions.
Searches are continuing after the collapse of the 18-storey building in Nairobi, which occurred on Friday 23 October. A woman rescued after the collapse was among those found. The authorities said on Saturday that 67 workers were at the site.
