Survivors of the bus crash in Mtito Andei, Kenya, say tensions preceded the departure of the group of worshippers, 24 of whose members died. Michael Musala, who was injured and treated at Makindu Level 4 Hospital, told Tuko that some passengers wanted to wait until Sunday morning, but the elders insisted on leaving on Saturday night.
The group of 47 worshippers was returning from Lugari, in Kakamega County, where they had attended their bishop’s funeral. Musala, the group’s secretary, said he almost stayed behind amid the rush to board. His sister was killed in the crash on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Tuko’s account gives the death toll as 24. Survivors are in hospital in Makindu, while the victims’ bodies have been transferred to the mortuary at Mtito Andei Hospital.
The crash is part of a series of reports published on 25 October about the collision between a bus and a lorry near Mtito Andei and the possibility that a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre caused the crash.
