Devianee Ramchurn, a former deputy mayor of Vacoas-Phoenix, is seeking to have the provisional money-laundering charge against her dropped in the case involving suitcases containing 113.8 million rupees. Her application was presented on Tuesday 27 October before the Pamplemousses court by her lawyer, Ravi Rutnah, according to Defimedia.
The defence argues that there are no reasonable grounds for suspicion and that the delays have been excessive. A representative of the Financial Crimes Commission, the Mauritian agency responsible for financial investigations, handed an affidavit to the defence. Rutnah is to examine it before deciding on his client’s position.
Devianee Ramchurn is accused of transferring 113.8 million rupees and foreign currency to Josian Laval Deelawon. Former Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has also been arrested by the FCC in the case, according to Defimedia.
The proceedings follow the FCC’s summons to Kobita Jugnauth on 9 October in connection with the case of the suitcases containing 114 million rupees.
