Mauritian reservoirs are only 53.2% full, compared with 81.6% a year ago, while Mare-aux-Vacoas is at 34%. The Central Water Authority carried out 118 inspections, issued 13 warnings and referred one case to police; an inter-ministerial committee is monitoring the crisis, reports Defimedia.
Water reservoirs in Mauritius are now 53.2% full, down from 81.6% at the same time in 2025, reports Defimedia. Mare-aux-Vacoas reservoir is only 34% full and could fall to 20% by the end of November.
At that level, drawing water would become more difficult and require more extensive treatment to ensure its quality. The Central Water Authority (CWA) carried out 118 inspections of drinking-water use, issued 13 warnings for car washing and referred one case to the police for failure to comply with restrictions, according to Defimedia.
The Mauritian prime minister chaired a meeting of the inter-ministerial committee on Thursday 22 October to discuss the water crisis. Eight ministries are represented, including those responsible for energy, housing, agro-industry, national infrastructure and health. The CWA and police plan to step up inspections, with possible arrests and fines, while the authorities are urging the public to limit waste, reports Defimedia.
