Tanzanian activist Twaha Mwaipaya was reportedly abducted on Sunday in Machakos County, Kenya, while travelling by taxi to visit friends. Amnesty International Kenya and the Defenders Coalition are urging Kenyan authorities to find him, while relatives fear a forced transfer to Tanzania, reports Taarifa.

Tanzanian activist Twaha Mwaipaya was reportedly abducted on Sunday at around 2pm while travelling by taxi in Kamulu, in Kenya’s Machakos County, according to Amnesty International Kenya and the Defenders Coalition. The human rights organisations are calling on the Kenyan authorities to locate him quickly and guarantee his safety, reports Taarifa.

Local witnesses say the abductors were travelling in three vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser. Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi, a critic of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government, fears that Mwaipaya could be transferred to Tanzania and killed if he crosses the border.

Maria Sarungi herself was abducted by armed men in Nairobi on 12 January 2025 before being released the same day. She subsequently accused the Tanzanian government of being involved in her abduction, reports Taarifa.
