Tanzania is calling on the four countries bordering Lake Tanganyika to strengthen the implementation of decisions and strategies to protect this resource, which supports more than 13 million people through fishing, transport and biodiversity conservation. The call was made by Richard Muyungi, secretary-general of the Tanzanian vice-president’s office responsible for the Union and the environment, at the opening of the 15th meeting of the management committee of the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) in Dar es Salaam.
Richard Muyungi cited unsustainable fishing, pollution, habitat degradation, the effects of climate change and population growth among the main threats. He called on member states to honour their financial obligations and implement ministerial decisions, work plans and adopted budgets.
The Tanzanian official also called on the LTA to prepare projects that could secure funding from the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility. The chair of the LTA management committee, Mfumu Richard, for his part stressed the need to increase resources allocated to managing and protecting the lake.
