The UN Security Council is calling for a full investigation into deadly drone strikes near Amiet market and Todach, in the disputed Abyei region. In its 23 October statement, it warned that targeting civilians could constitute a war crime and called for those responsible to be held accountable, according to Radio Tamazuj.
The United Nations Security Council has called for a full, transparent and swift investigation into drone strikes that killed and wounded civilians near Amiet market and Todach, in the disputed Abyei area. In a statement issued on 23 October, it called for those responsible to be brought to justice and warned that attacks on civilians could constitute war crimes, according to Radio Tamazuj.
The strikes took place on 19 October and hit women and children among others. South Sudanese officials accused the Sudanese Armed Forces, while the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) continued to verify the death toll, Radio Tamazuj reports.
The Security Council recalled the prohibition under international humanitarian law of targeting civilians and civilian property. It also called on all parties to halt military operations and keep Abyei demilitarised, with no forces other than UNISFA.
The UN call came after Juba condemned the deadly bombing of Amiet market and the African Union denounced the drone attack, announced on 21 and 23 October. Abyei is claimed by Sudan and South Sudan, which have never held the referendum provided for under the 2005 peace agreement.
