Two young men were killed in Nagero, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan, on Thursday and Friday, in shootings that allegedly involved members of the security forces. The South Sudanese organisation Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) condemned the deaths and called for an urgent investigation, Eyeradio reports.
CEPO executive director Edmond Yekani called on state and national authorities, military justice authorities and the presidency to establish responsibility. He warned that the deaths risked eroding trust in security institutions and discouraging young people from taking part in elections.
According to Bernardo Gabriel Amin, executive director of Nagero County, David was shot on Thursday near Freedom Square while returning from the market. Monday Valerio was allegedly killed on Friday in the family compound, where he was with his parents and friends. Amin had said that the two suspected shooters had been arrested and taken to a military barracks.
Yekani also called on the South Sudanese army, police and National Security Service to investigate the shootings, amid tensions following recent clashes between government forces and armed opposition groups in the region.
