FIFA places Nigerian football under interim committee until 2027

FIFA has approved a normalisation committee to administer the Nigeria Football Federation until a new leadership is elected, with a deadline set for 31 May 2027. Its members will be appointed jointly by FIFA and CAF and will not be allowed to stand for the future leadership, according to the Nigerian federation.

FIFA has approved the creation of a normalisation committee tasked with administering the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) until a new leadership is elected, the federation announced on Thursday. The members of this interim body will be appointed jointly by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), MyJoyOnline reports.

The committee must complete its mission by 31 May 2027 at the latest. Its members will under no circumstances be allowed to stand for the positions to be filled in the next NFF elections, according to a letter signed by FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström. Until they are appointed, the federation’s secretariat will continue to manage day-to-day affairs.

The intervention follows the resignations on 27 August of NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, secretary-general Mohammed Sanusi and other members of the executive committee. The crisis was also fuelled by Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, according to MyJoyOnline.
