Sierra Leone’s U15 team lost 2-1 to Afghanistan in its opening match of the FIFA U15 World Cup and festival in Baku. The young Sierra Stars will seek to recover against Russia, while the tournament brings together 189 member associations, according to Sierraloaded.

Sierra Leone lost 2-1 to Afghanistan in their first match of the FIFA U15 World Cup and festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 24 October, Sierraloaded reports. The young Sierra Stars failed to equalise in the final minutes, despite their chances and reaction after conceding a goal.

The Sierra Leonean side will next face Russia and will seek to earn its first points in the competition, according to Sierraloaded. The festival brings together 189 FIFA member associations in a format designed to give young players international experience and competitive matches.

The defeat came after the team’s arrival in Baku, announced on 20 October, and its integration into the FIFA festival, announced on 17 October. Sierra Leone had thus joined the competition before playing this first match.
