Sierra Leone and Cuba want to expand cooperation in health, education, agriculture, fishing, vocational training and private investment. Sierra Leonean minister Kenyeh Barlay and Cuban ambassador Norma Sánchez Águila discussed these sectors at a meeting, according to Sierraloaded.
Sierra Leone and Cuba discussed strengthening their health cooperation, education, agriculture, fishing, vocational training and private investment during a meeting between Sierra Leone’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Barlay, and Cuban Ambassador Norma Sánchez Águila. The meeting was held at the minister’s office, Sierraloaded reported.
The Cuban ambassador notably proposed establishing a specialised diabetes treatment centre in Sierra Leone, as well as vocational training and skills transfer. She offered to put Sierra Leonean authorities in contact with the private operator of a diabetes clinic in Mozambique so that they could study its experience. The Cuban delegation had already held discussions with Sierra Leone’s ministries of Health and Pharmaceutical Products, without achieving the desired progress.
Kenyeh Barlay welcomed the proposal, while stressing the need to assess the project and identify viable financing options before creating a centre. She said the Ministry of Planning could help coordinate development initiatives. Norma Sánchez Águila also praised Sierra Leonean students trained in Cuba, particularly for their results and practical experience in hospitals.
