The Djiboutian Coast Guard inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for the Rule of Law at Sea in Doraleh on Thursday 22 October. It is intended to train law enforcement forces at sea in the western Indian Ocean, the Djibouti Information Agency (ADI) reports. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Saïd Nouh Hassan, Minister of Infrastructure and Equipment.
The centre is intended to strengthen staff’s technical and operational skills, encourage the sharing of expertise between institutions and support regional cooperation on maritime security issues. Djiboutian civilian and military officials, the United States ambassador to Djibouti, Cynthia Kierscht, and a representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) attended the inauguration.
Djibouti, the United States and UNODC reaffirmed their commitment to combating illegal activities at sea. The country lies at the crossroads of the Gulf of Aden, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the southern Red Sea.
The inauguration is part of a series of Djiboutian training and cooperation initiatives. On 7 October, the country inaugurated a regional French-language centre dedicated to teaching French.
