South Sudan’s Interior Ministry and the UN are coordinating security for the December 2026 general elections and access to humanitarian corridors. Discussions include police training and UN support for the electoral process, according to Eye Radio, which quoted acting Deputy Minister Marial Gumbke.
South Sudan’s Ministry of Interior and the United Nations discussed strengthening election security and access to humanitarian corridors ahead of the general elections scheduled for December 2026, according to Eye Radio. The discussions focused on preparing security forces, training police officers and UN support for the electoral process and humanitarian operations.
Acting Deputy Interior Minister Marial Gumbke said police officers were currently being trained in several regions of South Sudan. She added that the UN representative had undertaken to convey concerns related to access to humanitarian corridors to the relevant authorities.
The South Sudanese government is also recruiting National Wildlife Service personnel to help secure the election. This mobilisation complements preparations carried out with national institutions and international partners.
These discussions build on steps taken to prepare for the December elections, following the promise of peaceful elections in December, made on 14 October, and the electoral commission’s assessment of preparations in Yambio on 20 October.
