The Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, has urged Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign council to put citizens’ interests ahead of electoral ambitions. His remarks, circulated in a recording, divided residents and observers between praise for a patriotic message and criticism of political involvement, Daily Trust reports.
The Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, urged Nigerian politicians to put citizens’ welfare above their ambitions during a visit to his palace by the presidential campaign council of Bola Tinubu, Daily Trust reports. He also called on leaders in the North-West to unite in the face of insecurity and the difficulties preventing farmers from reaching their land.
The emir warned that officials would be judged on how they performed their duties. He told the campaign council’s director-general, Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, in particular, that leaders must help the people. Yari said the delegation had come to pay its respects to the emir and seek the support of the Katsina Emirate and its residents for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The emir’s remarks prompted mixed reactions after an audio recording of the meeting went viral. Some saw them as a patriotic gesture and an example of responsible leadership; others felt he had crossed the bounds expected of a traditional institution by publicly addressing sensitive political issues, Daily Trust reports.
The intervention comes amid debate over President Bola Tinubu’s record. On 25 October, the Nigerian opposition accused him of lacking empathy in the face of crises, while the APC leader said on the same day that Nigeria supported his re-election.
