Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson for the APC presidential campaign council, says ministers allegedly paid billions of naira to secure their positions before seeking to recover the money. The allegations revive controversy around Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign, with no names cited, reports BusinessDay.
Allegations that billions of naira were paid to secure ministerial positions are putting pressure on Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign. Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson for the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential campaign council, said some ministers had subsequently sought to recover the money while in office, reports BusinessDay.
Alwan Hassan made the allegations on Thursday during a television programme, without naming any minister or providing specific evidence. He said the practice did not involve only APC ministers and had existed before the party came to power. He also claimed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu had withheld budgetary allocations for fear that ministers would use the funds to recover the sums spent on their appointments.
Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress candidate Atiku Abubakar called on the head of state to reveal the names of the ministers concerned and the alleged beneficiaries. The controversy comes as Tinubu’s re-election campaign for 2027 was launched in Kaduna on Saturday. The APC leader had reiterated the previous day that Nigeria supported the candidacy, a position reported in the APC leader’s statement on Tinubu’s re-election.
