Senegal’s Economy Ministry says the Grand Water Transfer Project has not been scrapped, despite CFA francs 20 billion being withdrawn from the 2026 supplementary budget. CFA francs 13.8 billion has been rescheduled for 2027 to compensate affected people, the ministry says.

Senegal’s Ministry of Economy, Finance and Planning has rescheduled a CFA franc 13.8 billion allocation in the 2027 budget to compensate people affected by the Grand Water Transfer Project (GTE). The CFA franc 20 billion earmarked for this purpose in the 2026 supplementary finance bill (PLFR) was withdrawn, the ministry said on Saturday, according to Seneweb.

The ministry said the GTE had not been scrapped. As the census of affected people and assessment of compensation have not yet begun, the funds were moved to the initial 2027 finance bill (LFI), which has already been submitted to the National Assembly. The allocation may be increased depending on the project’s progress, according to the ministry.

The clarification came after the National Assembly rejected the 2026 supplementary finance bill on 24 October. It comes amid recent discussions on Senegal’s budget revenues and spending, after the Takku Wallu parliamentary group disputed CFA francs 340 billion in revenue on 23 October.
