The leader of Gambia’s United Democratic Party, A.N.M. Ousainu Darboe, called on supporters to move beyond political grudges and persuade members of rival parties to join them. He was speaking at a fundraiser organised by women traders at Brikama market to finance party activities, Kerr Fatou reports.
A.N.M. Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Gambia’s main opposition party, called on his supporters to persuade voters from rival parties rather than keep them at a distance. He was speaking on Sunday at a fundraiser organised by women vendors at Brikama market, according to Kerr Fatou.
The opposition leader asked activists not to allow political differences to turn into personal divisions and to treat new members with respect. He presented broadening the electoral base as a condition for the UDP’s political ambitions. The fundraiser was intended to finance the party’s activities and operations, not the construction of a house, mosque or bridge, he specified.
The call came after Darboe accused the Gambian government on 22 October of preparing violence ahead of the presidential election, in a campaign in which the UDP intends to win the 5 December presidential election.
