Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission will maintain the 2027 general election timetable unless there is lawful justification, chairman Joash Amupitan said in Port Harcourt. The body must publish the final voters’ register on 15 December and promises prosecutions for attacks on its officials, according to ThisDay.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the body responsible for elections in Nigeria, will maintain the timetable for the 2027 general election. Its chairman, Joash Amupitan, said the poll could only be changed with lawful justification on Sunday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, according to ThisDay.
The commission will publish the final voters’ register on 15 December, after reviewing more than 5,000 requests for corrections concerning, among other things, names and dates of birth. The provisional register is already available online and at designated locations for public inspection.
Rivers has 3,736,434 registered voters, the highest number among the six South-south states, ahead of Delta with 3,525,988 registered voters. The region has a total of 15,823,550 voters. Joash Amupitan asked electoral officials to ensure that no voter was denied the right to vote for operational reasons.
The announcement comes after INEC’s commitments to credible elections in Nigeria in 2027 and the strengthening of electoral security announced on 31 October. It also follows the threat of prosecution for those attacking INEC officials.
