The African Democratic Congress presidential campaign council calls for the arrest of the alleged attackers of its Sokoto governorship candidate, Munir Dan Iya. It accuses the Sokoto Marshals of vandalising vehicles and abducting two secret service officers, according to a council statement.
The campaign council of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a Nigerian opposition party, has called for the arrest of Sokoto State governorship candidate Munir Dan Iya’s alleged attackers, accusing Sokoto Marshals officers of carrying out the attack. The incident occurred on Saturday on Airport Road in Sokoto, as the candidate returned to the city after accompanying former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to the airport, according to council spokesperson Kola Ologbondiyan.
Several vehicles in the convoy were allegedly vandalised, including Munir Dan Iya’s personal SUV. Two Department of State Services (DSS) officers, Nigeria’s domestic intelligence service, assigned to protect him were also allegedly abducted by the Sokoto Marshals. The candidate reported the incident to the state police commissioner, the ADC-PCC said.
The ADC says Sokoto Marshals officers were subsequently stationed at Sokoto’s historic gates to check motorists and target vehicles bearing the party’s posters or symbols. The party accuses the publicly funded security unit of being used to intimidate political opponents. The attack comes after gunmen fired at a Nigerian candidate’s convoy in Sokoto, reported on 30 October, and as Tambuwal called for an investigation after the attack.
