Nigeria’s electoral commission is putting in place an intelligence-led security framework to protect voters, staff and materials ahead of the 2027 general election. Coordination with the police, military and security services will be extended to local areas, according to INEC’s daily bulletin.
Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unveiled an intelligence-led security framework in Gombe to protect voters, electoral staff and materials ahead of the 2027 general elections, Vanguard reports. Its chairman, Joash Amupitan, warned that those threatening ad hoc staff, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or permanent staff would be prosecuted.
Known as “ICCES Tentacle”, the framework extends coordination between INEC, the police, civil defence, intelligence services and the military to local government areas and the most remote registration centres. It is based on three pillars: mapping and reducing risks, protecting people and equipment, and ensuring access to the 176,846 polling units, according to Joash Amupitan.
The announcement comes after INEC promised to hold credible elections in Nigeria in 2027, published on 30 October. It also comes as Nigeria’s electoral register passed 103 million registered voters on the same day.
