French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish President Karol Nawrocki have withdrawn from attending the opening of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, scheduled for Saturday 31 October in Senegal, for domestic political reasons in their respective countries, reports Dakaractu.
Emmanuel Macron cancelled on 23 October a tour that was to take him to Dakar on 30 and 31 October, as well as to Abuja, Nigeria, amid social unrest in France. Karol Nawrocki, who was due to make a working visit to Senegal on Saturday, cut short his trip on Friday after police entered the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw, according to Dakaractu.
The Polish presidential plane turned back over Spain shortly after 6pm before landing in Warsaw, where the head of state joined an emergency meeting at the Presidential Palace. The dispute over the high court has pitted Donald Tusk’s government against President Nawrocki for several months, with Nawrocki having failed to endorse appointments proposed by the executive, reports Dakaractu.
The opening of the Youth Olympic Games comes after Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio arrived in Dakar, an arrival announced by Senegalese authorities on 30 October. Julius Maada Bio is among the leaders attending the event, while Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is due to welcome the participating delegations.
