Senegal is strengthening health preparations ahead of the Dakar Youth Olympic Games, which will bring together more than 2,700 athletes and 206 delegations. The risk of Ebola importation was raised after a case was confirmed in Nigeria, according to Health Emergency Operations Centre director Papa Samba Dièye.
The Health Emergency Operations Centre (COUS) is strengthening prevention and response to health risks ahead of the Dakar Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will bring together more than 2,700 athletes and 206 delegations for 14 days in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, Seneweb reports. Its director-general, Dr Papa Samba Dièye, is coordinating preparations intended for athletes, delegations and local populations.
The Ebola threat was reassessed after an imported case was confirmed in Nigeria on 22 October 2026. The probability of importation into Senegal consequently rose from ‘unlikely’ to ‘likely’, raising the overall risk level and leading to strengthened border surveillance, early detection and management of suspected cases, according to the assessment presented by the authorities.
Diphtheria is also being monitored more closely after recent transmission was reported in the Diamniadio health district. Dengue, malaria and Rift Valley fever are being monitored among vector-borne diseases, while the end of the rainy season, heatwaves and transport accidents also feature among the risks identified by the system.
The strengthened health preparations follow the mobilisation announced the previous day of 600 health workers and 30 ambulances for the Dakar 2026 YOG.
