Togo is strengthening health surveillance at its borders after a case of Ebola virus disease, Bundibugyo strain, was confirmed in Nigeria on 20 October. The ministry responsible for health announced the measures in a statement published on 27 October, calling on the public to remain vigilant.
The measures include thermal screening of travellers at Lomé’s Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, the port and various land entry points. The Togolese authorities are also strengthening preparations for the health response and awareness-raising activities, as Tunisia strengthens its health preparations against Ebola.
The ministry recommends regular handwashing, avoiding any contact with the bodily fluids of a person suspected of being infected and handling the bodies of people who have died from the disease with protection. It also advises cooking food, particularly meat, thoroughly, and quickly alerting the nearest health facility in the event of suspected infection. The disease can cause a sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea and sometimes unexplained bleeding.
