The third Russia-Africa summit opened on Wednesday 28 October in Moscow with a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin to conclude concrete contracts between Russia and African countries. The plenary session of the economic and humanitarian forum, held on 28 and 29 October, was co-chaired by Vladimir Putin and the president of the African Union, Évariste Ndayishimiye, reports the Burkinabè newspaper Sidwaya.
Vladimir Putin said the discussions would focus in particular on humanitarian cooperation, culture, science and the media. He said the BRICS accounted for 40% of global gross domestic product, notably thanks to its African members, South Africa and Nigeria, and called for reform of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to better finance the continent’s needs.
The Russian president also condemned debt as an instrument for subjugating Africa and said Russia was helping to reduce the debt of some countries by converting it into development projects. Burkinabè Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo led his country’s delegation to the meeting, where African representatives called for a balanced partnership with Moscow.
