Malian President Assimi Goïta is taking part in the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, which is focused in particular on economic relations between Russia and African states. His presence had already been announced before the summit opened, according to the Journal du Niger.
Malian Transitional President General Assimi Goïta took part on Wednesday 28 October 2026 in the opening of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in Moscow, the Journal du Niger reports. The meeting aims to turn the political ambitions between Russia and African states into economic cooperation projects.
The forum is being held at the Gostiny Dvor exhibition centre as part of the third Russia-Africa summit. Previous editions took place in Sochi in 2019 and St Petersburg in 2023. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, are among the leaders attending.
Goïta’s participation in the summit had been announced on 25 October. It comes amid a series of meetings in Moscow: on 28 October, the Malian president also discussed security in the Sahel with Denis Sassou Nguesso, president of the Republic of the Congo, while a meeting with Vladimir Putin had been announced at the Russia-Africa summit.
