Doris Ogala, African Action Congress candidate for Abia governor in 2027, has been remanded in Lagos in an alleged cyberstalking case involving Pastor Chris Okafor. Her party denounced what it called an infringement of democratic freedoms, Daily Post Nigeria reports.
Doris Ogala, a Nollywood actress and African Action Congress candidate for Abia State governor in 2027, has been remanded at Ikoyi Prison in Lagos in a case involving alleged cyberstalking of Pastor Chris Okafor. The order was made by Judge A. Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos, according to a statement by the African Action Congress published on Wednesday 28 October.
Shortly before being remanded, Doris Ogala accused her partner, Chris Okafor, of trying to use the law against her during an exchange in the courtroom. A video shared on social media shows her saying the court should allow ordinary citizens to speak.
The African Action Congress, the candidate’s party, denounced what it called an attack on democratic participation and fundamental freedoms. Its national publicity secretary, Rex I. Elanu, also accused Nigeria’s cybercrime law of being used to silence dissent and called for an impartial investigation into allegations of political interference linked to Doris Ogala’s opposition to Abia Governor Alex Otti.
The party called on the Nigerian police to act in the public interest and urged judicial officers to protect the candidate’s rights. It said it intended to defend the movement and its candidates through legal and democratic means, while demanding respect for due process.
