Kano’s State Assembly has approved a bill allowing the creation of state police in Nigeria, along with a supplementary budget reduced to about 1.211 trillion naira. The budget bill cuts Governor Abba Yusuf’s initial request by 266.61 billion naira, Leadership reports.

The Kano State House of Assembly in Nigeria has passed a supplementary budget of about 1.211 trillion naira for 2026, after cutting Governor Abba Yusuf’s initial proposal by 266.61 billion naira. The bill was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session chaired by Speaker Isma’il Falgore, according to Leadership.

The initial request stood at 1,477,829,666,130.71 naira. The Assembly also passed, after a clause-by-clause review of 26 clauses and a third reading, a bill to amend Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to allow the creation of state police services.

The budget’s approval came a day after Kano lawmakers approved the creation of a state police force in Nigeria, announced on 27 October 2026. The step is part of national efforts to amend the Constitution and authorise states to establish their own police forces.
