Sierra Leone’s Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, is consulting employers and workers to implement the end-of-service benefits provided for under Section 25 of the Employment Act 2023. He met representatives of the Labour Congress, the Employers’ Federation, his ministry and Smart Systems (SL) Ltd, according to Sierraloaded.
The consultations follow a ministerial directive issued two weeks earlier, which called for the full implementation of the provision and compliance with the law. Employers and employees requested clarification and proposed practical arrangements. Umaru Napoleon Koroma said he wanted to take their concerns into account while enforcing the legislation.
At the meeting, Mahmoud A. Idris, executive chairman of Smart Systems (SL) Ltd, presented a digital platform designed to administer and monitor the benefits scheme. The system is intended to link employers, employees, fund administrators and the ministry. It notably provides for the automatic calculation of employers’ obligations, the recording of accumulated amounts and the production of compliance reports.
Indian companies had also discussed Sierra Leone’s labour law on 14 October, before the minister sought investors in India on 21 October. These steps are part of recent discussions on employment and investment, as reported in the article on Indian companies and labour law.
