Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security trained more than 150 livestock facilitators in 11 districts covered by its Livestock and Livelihoods Development Project. The two-week training ended on 24 October, according to Sierraloaded.
The sessions were held in Bo from 12 to 17 October for participants from five districts, then in Makeni from 19 to 24 October for those from six others. The facilitators studied animal health, livestock practices and participatory learning methods, with field demonstrations and practical exercises.
They are to establish and support learning groups in their districts. Livestock farmers will be able to test practices on their animals and share their experiences as part of the farmer field school approach.
At the opening of the Bo session, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Bryan Smart-Kanu linked the programme to the government’s Feed Salone initiative, which aims to strengthen domestic food production and reduce dependence on imports, Sierraloaded reports. The World Food Programme has also recently provided seven motorbikes to agricultural officers in Pujehun.
