Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on 25 October that battalions would be sent to Niger, after the deployment of troops to Madama was approved. TelQuel is questioning the aims of this military presence and the interests it could serve, amid cooperation between Algiers and Niamey.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on 25 October 2026 that battalions of the Algerian People's National Army would be sent to Niger. The decision marks a break with the Algerian army's tradition of non-interventionism, TelQuel reports.
The deployment raises questions about the units' mission, including whether they will protect Niger, support General Abdourahamane Tiani or defend Algerian interests. Algeria had previously approved the deployment of troops to Madama, in northern Niger, according to TelQuel.
The announcement came after talks between Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Salifou Modi, Niger's defence minister, on Algerian-Nigerien military cooperation on 15 October. It follows the approval of the deployment of Algerian troops to Madama, announced on 25 October, and a Nigerien coordination body's defence of this cooperation on 27 October.
