Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed an executive order making health insurance compulsory for residents to reduce their healthcare costs. A steering committee and enforcement task force are to ensure its implementation in the state, according to P.M. News.
The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed an executive order making it compulsory for residents to enrol in a health insurance scheme. The measure aims to expand access to affordable, quality healthcare, the governor said on Wednesday in Lagos at an event organised by the Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce, P.M. News reports.
The state has set up a steering committee responsible for implementing Lagos’s private health insurance scheme, as well as an enforcement task force. The two bodies are to oversee the rollout of the measure and ensure that residents and relevant stakeholders comply with its provisions.
According to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the scheme is intended to reduce healthcare costs for patients and provide hospitals and other health facilities with a more predictable source of income. The governor believes that health insurance can thereby facilitate access to essential services without full payment at the time of consultation or treatment.
