Russia and Mozambique will strengthen strategic cooperation, while their trade nearly doubled between January and August. Vladimir Putin announced the increase during a meeting in Moscow with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, on the sidelines of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit, according to Russian diplomatic statements.

Trade between Russia and Mozambique nearly doubled from January to August 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting in Moscow with his Mozambican counterpart Daniel Chapo, on the sidelines of the summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Club of Mozambique reports.

Daniel Chapo said, in an account published on Facebook, that the two leaders had agreed to deepen economic and trade cooperation in energy, mining, agriculture, transport, education, science and information technology. Putin also mentioned an increase in the number of places funded by Russia’s federal budget for Mozambican students and the training, for the first time this year, of Mozambican officials in Russia.

The Russian president also promised continued Russian humanitarian aid to Mozambique following flooding during the last rainy season. He recalled that diplomatic relations between the two countries were established 50 years ago, in 1975, and praised Mozambique’s support for certain Russian initiatives in multilateral institutions, notably the United Nations.

The meeting follows Daniel Chapo’s efforts to expand exchanges with Moscow. On 26 October, the Mozambican president had already announced plans to strengthen economic cooperation with Russia (economic cooperation with Russia). A project to increase to 150 the number of annual scholarships for Mozambican students in Russia had also been discussed on 27 October (scholarships in Russia).
