Mozambican President Daniel Chapo promises better support for his country’s students in Russia, including by appointing a consular official to deal with their problems. His government is negotiating with Moscow to raise the number of scholarships to around 150 a year and is also reviewing their value, Opais reports.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo said his government was negotiating with Russia to increase to around 150 the number of scholarships awarded each year to Mozambican students, Opais reports. He made the announcement during a meeting with students and members of the Mozambican community in Russia, who are calling in particular for higher allowances and better living conditions.
Chapo also said he wanted to send an official from the Mozambican embassy in Russia to monitor the students’ difficulties. The government is also considering sending Interior Ministry teams to handle procedures related to identity cards and passports, or collecting biometric data remotely using digital tools. Issuance fees would not change, but sending the documents abroad could incur additional costs.
The students also reported difficulties transferring money amid sanctions linked to the war in Russia. The president said his government would seek mechanisms to facilitate transfers and backed the creation of a national association of Mozambican students in Russia to structure dialogue with the authorities.
The announcement came during Daniel Chapo’s visit to Russia, during which he also discussed expanding economic cooperation between Mozambique and Russia.
