Energy company Sasol will fund 30 scholarships at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique and plans to send 10 students to Malaysia in October. The initiatives are aimed in particular at young people from three districts in Inhambane province, according to company information seen by the newspaper Redactor.
The 10 selected students, three from Inhambane and seven from other provinces, took part in a departure ceremony in September. The training programme in Malaysia, run with the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, began in 2013 and has already benefited more than 60 students. The current memorandum provides for 20 scholarships at Petronas University of Technology through 2030. Half of the beneficiaries are to come from Inhambane, and the programme aims for 50% female participation.
At Eduardo Mondlane University, the partnership between Sasol and the Faculty of Engineering has supported a master’s degree in hydrocarbon processing engineering since 2016, which has trained 61 graduates. The company is also funding the renovation of the associated laboratory, at a cost of one million dollars. The work is due to be completed at the end of 2026.
Students on the master’s programme undertake internships at Sasol’s operations in Temane and at other companies in the sector. Their research covers fuel and methanol production, natural gas processing and energy efficiency.
