Severe weather damaged electricity networks and interrupted supply to several neighbourhoods in Maputo and its province, Mozambique. Teams from state-owned Electricidade de Moçambique are gradually restoring power, but several areas remain without electricity, according to a statement from the operator.

Bad weather caused power cuts in several neighbourhoods in Maputo city and province, Mozambique. Strong winds, felt in the south of the country since early Tuesday evening, 19 October, damaged medium- and low-voltage electricity networks, according to Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the national electricity company.

In the capital, outages affected Katembe and neighbourhoods including Alto Maé, Maxaquene, Mafalala, Chamanculo, Polana Caniço A and Laulane. In the province, areas of Boane, Matola, Matola-Rio and Moamba were also affected, as well as the districts of Magude and Manhiça.

EDM technical teams were deployed to restore power gradually. At the time of its announcement, several areas remained without electricity, including neighbourhoods in Boane and Matola-Rio, Manchafane in Katembe and Mafuiane in Namaacha district. The company asked the public to report faults on its infrastructure by calling 1455.
