The deal is intended to make payments more predictable and support economic and social priorities, according to a statement from Mozambique’s Finance Ministry reported by Jornal Notícias.
Mozambique and China signed a supplementary framework agreement on 26 October to reschedule public debt servicing, the Mozambican Finance Ministry announced. The agreement was initialled by Finance Minister Carla Loveira and China’s ambassador to Maputo, Zheng Xuan.
The rescheduling aims to adapt payments to Mozambique’s financial capacity and ease immediate pressure on the state budget. According to the ministry, it should also make public-resource management more predictable and facilitate funding for economic and social priorities.
The agreement is part of Mozambique’s medium-term public debt management strategy for 2025-2029. It follows meetings between President Daniel Chapo and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during a state visit to China.
