Residents found severely decomposed human remains near Muanga, in Muidumbe district, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. Local sources suspect the remains belong to a victim of insurgent groups active in the region, where two people were also allegedly killed the previous week, the Lusa news agency reports.
Farmers discovered severely decomposed human remains on Sunday 25 October in the lower area of Muanga, in Muidumbe district, in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. The discovery was made between a stream and a tomato field, according to local sources quoted by the Lusa news agency.
Residents of Nangunde suspect the remains belong to a victim of insurgent groups active in northern Mozambique, but have been unable to identify the person. The previous week, the groups allegedly killed two people and abducted two others in the same area, which residents consider dangerous, Lusa reports.
The armed insurgency that has affected Cabo Delgado since 2017 has killed more than 6,600 people and displaced about 1.2 million, according to international organisations. An OCHA report published in September estimates that conflict-related incidents increased by 10% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, and reports an increase in kidnappings for ransom and forced recruitment, particularly of children.
The discovery comes after an increase in attacks targeting civilians in Cabo Delgado, reported on 18 October by the Islamic State group.
