Pauline Sewsunker, a 43-year-old resident of Phoenix accused of participating in an alleged human-trafficking network in Durban, was granted 10,000 rands bail at Durban Regional Court, reports IOL.
According to investigator Karl Ronald Sander’s affidavit, three young women were allegedly recruited in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, in February and March 2022 under the pretence of legitimate jobs selling SIM cards or working at a call centre. Sewsunker is the fifth accused in the case, which also involves a 65-year-old Durban businessman charged with sexual assault. The suspects are also charged under South Africa’s Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act, as well as with offences linked to cybercrime, sexually explicit content and fraud. The arrests took place between August and October, according to IOL.
