Men suspected of being Democratic Progressive Party activists threw stones at former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in Blantyre. A vehicle linked to the Malawi Congress Party was also damaged before a religious ceremony, MaraviPost reports, citing witnesses and a party official.

Men suspected of being Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets, the ruling party in Malawi, threw stones at former President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in Blantyre on Sunday 25 October, MaraviPost reports. The convoy was travelling to a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian at HHI.

Enphraim Banda, regional secretary of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Chakwera’s party, confirmed that a vehicle belonging to Moses Kunkuyu, the party’s campaign director, had been damaged. Malawian police gathered at the event venue after the incident.

The circumstances of the attack and the identities of those involved are still being investigated. Foreign Minister George Chaponda represented President Peter Mutharika, who was out of the country on a private trip to South Africa.
