The fuel shortage has continued for more than a month in Malawi, forcing motorists to search for fuel at service stations every day. Users are awaiting precise information from the government on a way out of the crisis, the Malawian daily Times reported in its 24 October 2026 edition.
The government attributes the difficulties to a shortage of foreign currency, without having presented a clear solution for obtaining it. In Zomba, queues outside service stations illustrate the continuing disruption, according to Times.
The crisis worsened after the M1 road was blocked at Chiweta, while the black market is now selling fuel at twice the price, according to information previously reported by Times. It follows the declaration of a national emergency and accusations by the Malawian opposition against the authorities on 22 October.
