Malawi has withdrawn Tujilane Chizumila’s candidacy for a judgeship at the International Criminal Court. The election of judges, who serve nine-year terms, will be held from 7 to 17 December 2026 in New York, according to the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute.

Malawi has withdrawn Tujilane Chizumila’s candidacy for election as a judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), leaving the country without a candidate in the election, according to a statement from the Malawi Embassy dated 20 October 2026. The Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, the ICC’s governing body, recorded the withdrawal in an addendum to its official documents published the same day.

The Malawian government had nominated Chizumila on 27 March 2026. The judges will be elected in New York from 7 to 17 December, during the 25th session of the Assembly of States Parties. ICC judges, who serve on the permanent court responsible for prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression, are elected by member states for nine-year terms.
