The Ethiopian Federal Police has completed its investigation into an alleged human trafficking and migrant smuggling network operating from Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi. The files on suspects Adnew Bashaw Wudamo and Tamrat Erdado Moloro have been sent to the prosecution office of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Justice for possible prosecution, the federal police said on Facebook on Thursday.
Wudamo, an Ethiopian national known as Adhino in Malawi and identified as the network’s alleged leader, was arrested in July and extradited to Ethiopia. The investigation was conducted with the Malawian police, Interpol and regional mechanisms associated with the Khartoum Process, according to Mwnation.
The network allegedly arranged for young Ethiopians to be transferred to South Africa via Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. Investigators accuse its members of deceiving and abusing migrants, transporting them in overcrowded vehicles and extorting money from them, according to the Ethiopian Federal Police.
