Rodwell Zimba, a former under-secretary at Malawi’s Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture, died on Tuesday after 28 years of legal proceedings to secure payment of his withheld salary and benefits, reports Malawivoice. He was arrested under the Malawi Congress Party government of former President Hastings Kamuzu Banda and detained after being accused of tribalism.

After the introduction of multiparty democracy, Rodwell Zimba took legal action to claim his salary, allowances, pension rights and gratuity. His son Gerald Zimba said his condition worsened while he was being taken to hospital and that a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival. He was due to be buried on Thursday at HHI Cemetery, according to Malawivoice.
