Kenyan Zola Madaga says she boarded a flight to Ghana despite her old blue passport having been invalidated, while her replacement application had not yet been processed. Stopped at the check-in counter, she obtained special authorisation after an immigration services contact intervened, according to her testimony posted on Facebook and reported by Tuko.

Zola Madaga, a Kenyan travelling to Ghana for work, says she was able to board despite holding a Kenyan passport declared invalid for international travel. She recounted the incident in a video posted on Facebook, Tuko reports.

Madaga says she had applied for a new passport but had not received it before her departure. At the airport, an airline employee told her that her old navy-blue passport could no longer be used for travel abroad and that special authorisation was required.

As the boarding deadline approached, a colleague contacted an acquaintance working for the airport immigration services. After waiting for a response, Madaga eventually received instructions from this contact and was able to board the flight to Accra, where Kotoka International Airport is located. The Kenyan government was then replacing the old document with the new light-blue East African Community passport.
