Malawi’s Human Rights Consultative Committee has asked the Inspector General of Police to investigate a disputed court document purportedly authorising nationwide protests against fuel shortages. In a letter dated 26 October 2026, its chair Robert Mkwezalamba called for the seals and signature attributed to Deputy Registrar Brian Sambo to be checked, MaraviPost reports.

The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), a Malawian human rights organisation, has asked the Inspector General of Police to launch an urgent investigation into a disputed court document, in a letter dated 26 October 2026. The document purportedly authorised nationwide demonstrations against fuel shortages, but allegedly contains false information and a potentially forged signature, according to HRCC Board Chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba.

The document bears the signature of Brian Sambo, a former deputy registrar who became chief resident magistrate in Kasungu. The HRCC has asked the High Court registry to verify whether the document was legally issued and for a forensic examination. It also wants the circumstances in which the document was produced, signed, stamped and circulated to be examined, along with possible access to court seals, stamps and records.

The committee has sought the support of the judiciary, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General. It has requested a progress report within 14 days of receiving its complaint, subject to the investigation’s confidentiality requirements, MaraviPost reports.
